An Brat Glas / The Green Flag

Bhí sé mar phríomhsprioc ag an gCoiste Glas feasacht ar chúrsaí fuinnimh a fheabhsú agus caomhnú fuinnimh a chur chun cinn le dhá bhliain anuas.  Leanamar ar aghaidh ag obair go díograiseach chun bruscar agus dramhaíl  a laghdú sa scoil agus mórthimpeall na scoile freisin.

Bhí áthas an domhain orainn deimhniú a fháil ar an 17ú Aibreán gur éirigh linn an tarna Brat Glas a bhaint amach.  Ghlac Jack agus Ciara ón gCoiste Glas leis an mbrat ar son na scoile ag searmanas bronnta in Óstán an Raddison Blu san Oileán Beag ar an 3ú Bealtaine 2018.  Táimid ag súil go mór leis an éacht iontach atá curtha i gcrích againn a cheiliúradh nuair a ardófar an brat taobh amuigh de Ghaelscoil an Ghoirt Álainn roimh dheireadh na scoilbhliana seo!

For the past two years the primary objective of the Green-Schools Committee was to raise energy awareness and to promote energy conservation.  We also continued our efforts to reduce litter and waste in the school and its surroundings.

We were delighted to receive confirmation on 17th April that we had succeeded in earning our second Green Flag.  Jack and Ciara from the Green-Schools Committee accepted the flag on behalf of the school at an awards ceremony in the Raddison Blu Hotel in Little Island on 3rd May 2018.  We are really looking forward to celebrating our wonderful achievement when we raise the flag outside Gaelscoil an Ghoirt Álainn before the end of the school year!

👀📝📊 Athbhreithniú Timpeallachta 👀📝📊

Ceistneoirí

Iarradh ar na páistí i ngach rang ó na Naíonáin Mhóra go dtí Rang a Sé ceistneoirí faoi chúrsaí fuinnimh a líonadh.  Ansin cheartaigh na páistí ar an gCoiste Glas iad chun léargas a fháil ar an tuiscint a bhí ag páistí na scoile ar an ábhar seo agus ar na nósanna a bhí acu fuinneamh a chaomhnú/ a chur amú.

The children in each class from Senior Infants to Sixth Class were given energy questionnaires to complete.  The children on the Green-Schools Committee then corrected them in order to gain an insight into the children’s understanding of this topic and their tendencies to conserve/waste energy.

Iniúchadh ar Fhearas a bhí fágtha ar Siúl/ ar Fuireachas

Chuaigh Chloe, Noel, Ben agus Ciara timpeall na scoile chun iniúchadh a dhéanamh ar fhearas a bhí fágtha ar siúl agus ar fuireachas.  Thug na torthaí le fios go raibh sé de nós ag cuid de phobal na scoile gléasanna leictreacha a fhágáil ar siúl nuair nach rabhadar in úsáid.  Shocraigh an Coiste Glas dul i ngleic leis na drochnósanna seo agus bunaíodh cuid de na spriocanna sa Phlean Gníomhaíochta ar na léargais a tháinig as an iniúchadh seo.

Chloe, Noel, Ben and Ciara went around the school to complete a Standby Survey.  The results indicated that some people in the school had a habit of leaving electrical appliances switched on when they were not being used.  The Green-Schools Committee decided to tackle this issue, and some of the objectives in the Action Plan were based on insights gained from this survey.

Iniúchadh ar Shoilse

Chuaigh Josh, Laura, Fionn, Tara agus Jack timpeall na scoile chun suirbhé soilse a dhéanamh.  Bhí orthu na soilse go léir a chomhaireamh, na saghsanna éagsúla (bolgáin DSF/ bolgáin ghealbhruthacha/ bolgáin eile) a bhí i gceist a breacadh síos agus cuntas a choinneáil ar na cinn a bhí lasta.  Thugadar faoi ndeara go raibh sé de nós ag cuid de phobal na scoile soilse a fhágáil ar lasadh i seomraí a bhí folamh.  Theastaigh ón gCoiste Glas an scéal seo a athrú mar chuid den Phlean Gníomhaíochta.

Josh, Laura, Fionn, Tara and Jack went around the school to complete a Light Survey.  They had to count all of the lights, noting the various types (CFL/ incandescent/ other) and counting how many were switched on.  They noticed that some people in the school left lights switched on in rooms which were empty.  The Green-Schools Committee sought to change this as part of the Action Plan.

Barrachairteacha

Léirigh Rang a Ceathair torthaí na n-iniúchtaí thuas ar bharrachairteacha.

Fourth Class illustrated the results of these surveys on bar charts.

Ceapadh Kacie agus Tara mar mhonatóirí bruscair le haghaidh na scoilbhliana 2017-2018 ar an 14ú Meán Fómhair 2017.  Téann na monatóirí bruscair chuig na seomraí ranga go léir ar an Déardaoin/Aoine d’fhonn na boscaí athchúrsála agus na boscaí bruscair a iniúchadh le cinntiú go bhfuil an bruscar scagtha i ceart.  Bronntar corn speisialta atá déanta as ábhair athchúrsáilte ar an rang a dhéanann an iarracht is fearr chuige seo ag an tionól scoile ar an Aoine.

Kaci and Hugh were appointed litter monitors in March 2017 for that school year (with Chelsea as super sub)!  Kacie and Tara were appointed litter monitors for the 2017-2018 school year on 14th September 2017.  The litter monitors visit each classroom on Thursday/Friday to check that waste has been sorted into the recycling and rubbish bins properly.  The class which has made the best effort is then awarded a special trophy made from recycled materials at the school assembly on Friday.

Fuinneamh

Monatóirí Fuinnimh

Thug Ciara (Rang a Sé) agus Ben (Rang a Cúig) seicliosta do gach rang chun cabhrú leo fuinneamh a chaomhnú agus mhíníodar an córas a bheadh á chur i bhfeidhm ag an gCoiste Glas chun monatóireacht a dhéanamh ar chaomhnú fuinnimh sa scoil.  Ina dhiaidh sin cuireadh tús leis an monatóireacht.  Téann Ciara agus Ben timpeall na scoile ag am sosa mhóir gach lá.  Cuireann siad pictiúr de bholgán DSF atá glas agus sásta ar taispeáint ar an doras má tá an clár bán idirghníomhach agus na soilse go léir múchta sa seomra ranga sin.  Fágann siad pictiúr de bholgán solais gealbhruthach atá dearg agus brónach ar an doras má tá ceann fágtha ar siúl.  Chruthaigh Rang a Dó “Corn Fuinnimh” speisialta as rudaí athchúrsáilte.  Ar an Aoine déanann Ben agus Ciara comhaireamh ar líon na mbolgán solais glas a ghnóthaigh gach rang le seachtain anuas, agus bronnann siad an corn ar rang a d’oibrigh go dian dícheallach chun fuinneamh a chaomhnú an tseachtain sin.  Cuireann siad pictiúr de bholgán DSF óir atá sona sásta ar taispeáint ar an doras den seomra ranga cuí chomh maith mar aitheantas ar an ngaisce atá déanta ag na páistí sa seomra sin!

Ciara (6th Class) and Ben (5th Class) gave each class a checklist to help them to conserve energy and explained the system that the Green-Schools Committee would be using to monitor energy conservation in the school.  The monitoring then commenced.  Ciara and Ben go around the school during big break each day.  They put a picture of a happy green CFL bulb on the door if the interactive whiteboard and lights are all switched off in that classroom.  They leave a picture of a sad red incandescent light bulb on the door if one is left switched on.  Second Class created a special “Energy Trophy” out of recycled materials.  On Friday Ben and Ciara count how many green light bulbs each class earned over the past week, and award the trophy to a class that has worked exceptionally hard to conserve energy that week.  They also put a picture of a super happy gold CFL bulb on the door of the appropriate classroom to recognise the achievement of the children in that room!

Méadar Leictreachais

Tá méadar leictreachais againn i nGaelscoil an Ghoirt Álainn a thugann le fios dúinn cé mhéad leictreachais a úsáidtear sa scoil gach lá agus gach oíche.  Léann Ben/ Chloe/ Múinteoir Nóirín é gach maidin agus gach tráthnóna.  Bíonn áthas an domhain orainn nuair a léiríonn an méadar gur éirigh linn fuinneamh a chaomhnú!

We have an electricity meter in Gaelscoil an Ghoirt Álainn which lets us know how much electricity is used in the school each day and night.  Ben/ Chloe/ Múinteoir Nóirín read it each morning and evening.  We are delighted when it shows that we have succeeded in conserving energy!

Ceistneoirí

Iarradh ar na páistí sna Naíonáin Mhóra, i Rang a hAon agus i Rang a Dó an bhileog mheasúnaithe ina raibh orthu X a chur ar gach sampla de chur amú fuinnimh a líonadh isteach arís i Mí Feabhra 2018 tar éis dóibh tabhairt faoi obair churaclaim mar gheall ar chúrsaí fuinnimh.  Bhí ar na páistí sna hardranganna an ceistneoir a líonadar isteach cheana féin faoi chúrsaí fuinnimh a chomhlíonadh don tarna uair chomh maith.  Ba léir ó na measúnuithe seo go raibh feabhas suntasach tagtha ar an tuiscint a bhí ag na páistí ar an ábhar seo agus go rabhadar i bhfad níos fearr chun fuinneamh a chaomhnú ná mar a bhíodar ag an tús.

The children in Senior Infants, First Class and Second Class were asked to complete the assessment in which they had to mark an X on each example of energy being wasted again in February 2018 after completing curriculum work about energy.  The children in the senior classes also had to complete the questionnaire they had filled in about energy previously for a second time.  It was clear from these assessments that the children’s understanding of this topic had significantly improved and that they were much better to conserve energy than they had been initially.

Iniúchadh ar Fhearas a bhí fágtha ar Siúl/ ar Fuireachas

Chuaigh Chloe, Noel, Kacie agus Chelsea timpeall na scoile ar an 7ú Márta 2018 chun iniúchadh a dhéanamh ar fhearas a bhí fágtha ar fuireachas gan choinne arís.  Thugadar faoi ndeara go raibh sáriarracht á déanamh ag gach uile rang sa scoil fearas a mhúchadh agus fuinneamh a chaomhnú.  Ní raibh aon ghléas leictreach fágtha ar fuireachas agus ní raibh oiread is clár bán idirghníomhach amháin fágtha ar siúl ag am sosa mhóir!

Chloe, Noel, Kacie and Chelsea went around the school on 7th March 2018 to conduct another unannounced Standby Survey.  They noticed that every single class in the school was making a tremendous effort to switch off equipment and to conserve energy.  No electrical appliances were left on standby and not one single interactive whiteboard was left switched on at big break!

Iniúchadh ar Shoilse

Chuaigh Josh, Laura, Fionn, Tara agus Jack timpeall na scoile ar an 7ú Márta 2018 chun iniúchadh a dhéanamh ar shoilse gan choinne arís.  An lá sin ní raibh aon solas fágtha ar siúl in aon seomra ranga a bhí folamh.  Thug na torthaí le fios go raibh laghdú 22% tagtha ar an méid soilse a bhí in úsáid ar bhonn laethúil sa scoil.

Josh, Laura, Tara and Jack went around the school on 7th March 2018 to conduct another unannounced Light Survey.  That day no lights were left on in any empty classroom.  The results indicated that lights were being used 22% less in the school on a daily basis.

Barrachairteacha

Léirigh Rang a Ceathair torthaí na n-iniúchtaí thuas ar bharrachairteacha.  Ba léir go raibh dul chun cinn maith déanta againn ó thaobh caomhnú fuinnimh de!

Fourth Class illustrated the results of these surveys on bar charts.  It was clear that we had made good progress in our efforts to conserve energy!

Bruscar agus Dramhaíl

Lipéid agus Ceachtanna

Tá pictiúir ar na boscaí athchúrsála agus ar na boscaí bruscair chun cabhrú leis na páistí an dramhaíl a scagadh i gceart.  Spreagtar iad chun rudaí a athúsáid chomh maith m.sh. bileoga páipéir nach bhfuil úsáidte ach ar thaobh amháin, agus chun araid múirín a úsáid sa bhaile.  Mhúin na múinteoirí ranga agus na páistí ar an gCoiste Glas mioncheachtanna do na ranganna éagsúla freisin le cur i gcuimhne dóibh cad ba chóir dóibh a chur i ngach bosca.

There are pictures on the recycling and litter bins to help the children to sort waste properly.  They are encouraged to reuse items, e.g. sheets of paper which are only used on one side, and to use a compost bin at home.  The class teachers and children on the Green-Schools Committee also taught mini-lessons to the various classes in order to remind them of what goes in each bin.

Fuinneamh

Bunranganna

Ba bhreá leis na Naíonáin, le Rang a hAon agus le Rang a Dó “Leabhar Mór Ghuslaeir ar Fhuinneamh” a léamh.

The Infants, First Class and Second Class loved reading “Guzzler’s Big Book on Energy“.

Thug na bunranganna faoi ndeara go raibh an t-uafás fuinnimh á chur amú ag an nGuslaer Fuinnimh agus d’éirigh go geal leo nuair a iarradh orthu moltaí a thabhairt dó d’fhonn cabhrú leis fuinneamh a chaomhnú.

The junior classes noticed that the Energy Guzzler was wasting an awful lot of energy, and came up with brilliant advice to help him to conserve energy.

D’fhoghlaimíodar go leor mar gheall ar fhoinsí teasa agus solais agus mar gheall ar ghléasanna leictreacha freisin.

They also learnt lots about heat and light sources, and about electrical appliances.

Ardranganna

Léirigh Ranganna a Trí go dtí a Sé spéis bheo agus iad ag foghlaim faoi chúrsaí fuinnimh freisin.  Bhain na páistí idir thaitneamh agus thairbhe as na ceardlanna a chuir an tSaotharlann Saolré i láthair dóibh ar an ábhar seo ar son Údarás Fuinnimh Inmharthana na hÉireann sna blianta 2017 agus 2018.  Chabhraigh na ceardlanna leo an tábhacht a bhaineann le hacmhainní in-úsáidte fuinnimh a thuiscint.

Third to Sixth Class also displayed a keen interest in learning about energy.  The children both enjoyed and benefitted immensely from workshops run by the Lifetime Lab on behalf of the SEAI on this topic in 2017 and 2018.  The workshops helped them to appreciate the importance of renewable energy sources.

D’éirigh leis na hardranganna go léir iniúchadh a dhéanamh ar fhuinneamh sa bhaile chomh maith!

All of the senior classes also completed an energy audit at home!

Ceol

Baineann na páistí go léir an-sult as na hamhráin “Cuir ort do Chóta!” agus “Úsáid Arís!” a chanadh.  Is aoibhinn leo na geáitsí a chum Rang a Trí agus a Ceathair a dhéanamh, agus iad i mbun ceoil.

The children all thoroughly enjoy singing the songs “Cuir ort do Chóta!” and “Úsáid Arís!”, and love performing the actions composed by Third and Fourth Class to the music.

Ealaín

Léirigh gach rang sa scoil an-chumas agus iad i mbun ealaíne spreagtha ag an téama “caomhnú fuinnimh”.

  • Chuir na Naíonáin Bheaga dath ar phictiúir de ghléasanna leictreacha a bhíonn againn sa bhaile agus ar scoil.
  • Dhathaigh na Naíonáin Mhóra pictiúir d’fhoinsí solais agus teasa.
  • D’éirigh go geal le Rang a hAon agus iad ag dathú pictiúir de bhéir ag caomhnú fuinnimh ar go leor bealaí éagsúla.

Tharraing agus dhathaigh na meánranganna agus na hardranganna pictiúir iontacha bunaithe ar na téamaí seo a leanas:

  • bealach amháin chun fuinneamh a chaomhnú (Rang a Dó)
  • trí bhealach chun fuinneamh a chaomhnú sa bhaile (Rang a Trí)
  • trí bhealach chun fuinneamh a chaomhnú ar scoil (Rang a Ceathair)
  • fuinneamh gréine (Rang a Cúig)
  • fuinneamh gaoithe (Rang a Sé)

Nuair a bhí na saothair go léir curtha i gcrích ag na ranganna d’fhéach páistí an Choiste Ghlais orthu i mbeirteanna.  Bhí an ealaín ar ardchaighdeán ar fad ach ar deireadh d’éirigh leo buaiteoir amháin a roghnú ó gach rang.  Socraíodh go mbronnfaí teastais ar na páistí seo ag an tionól scoile mar aitheantas ar an sárobair a bhí curtha isteach acu!

All of the classes in the school displayed great flair when completing artwork inspired by the theme of “energy conservation”.

  • The Junior Infants coloured in pictures of electrical appliances found at home and at school.
  • The Senior Infants coloured in pictures of light and heat sources.
  • First Class did brilliant work colouring in pictures of bears conserving energy in lots of different clever ways.

The middle and senior classes drew and coloured in wonderful pictures based on the following themes:

  • one way of conserving energy (Second Class)
  • three ways of conserving energy at home (Third Class)
  • three ways of conserving energy at school (Fourth Class)
  • solar energy (Fifth Class)
  • wind energy (Sixth Class)

When all of the classes had completed their artwork the children on the Green-Schools Committee looked at the pictures in pairs.  The standard was very high, but in the end they managed to select one winner from each class.  It was agreed that these children would be awarded certificates at the school assembly in recognition of their fantastic work!

Glantachán Náisiúnta an Earraigh 2017

Bhain na páistí i nGaelscoil an Ghoirt Álainn idir thaitneamh agus thairbhe as páirt a ghlacadh i nGlantachán Náisiúnta an Earraigh ar an 25ú agus 26ú Aibreán 2017. D’iarr an Coiste Glas ar gach rang áit ar leith i bhfoirgneamh/ i dtimpeallacht na scoile a ghlanadh agus thug na daltaí go léir faoin obair seo go fonnmhar agus go díograiseach.

Réitigh na leanaí sna Naíonáin Bheaga, sna Naíonáin Mhóra agus i Rang a hAon a seomraí ranga. Ghlan Rang a Dó (M. Cristín) an seanhalla agus ghlan Rang a Dó agus a Trí (M. Nóirín) an halla nua.  Bhailigh Rang a Trí (M. Lisa C) bruscar ó na cosáin agus ón bhféar idir foirgneamh na scoile agus na páirceanna imeartha, agus bhailigh Rang a Ceathair agus a Cúig (M. Deiric) an bruscar a bhí ar an taobh eile den fhoirgneamh.  Ghlan Rang a Ceathair (M. Eilish) an clós.  Ghlan Rang a Cúig (M. Máire) an pháirc imeartha atá díreach in aice leis an scoil agus ghlan Rang a Sé (M. Anna & M. Niamh) an pháirc imeartha eile.

Chaith na daltaí go léir na lámhainní agus na tabaird a sheol An Taisce chun na scoile d’fhonn a lámha agus a gcuid éadaí a choinneáil glan. Bhain cúpla rang úsáid as scuaba, as scuaba deannaigh agus as sluaistí deannaigh freisin.  Bhí na páistí an-chúramach le cinntiú gur chuireadar páipéar, cairtchlár, plaisteach agus miotal i málaí glasa ionas go ndéanfaí athchúrsáil orthu.  (Dar ndóigh b’éigean dóibh gach buidéal plaisteach a fholmhú sular cuireadh isteach i mála glas é.)  Cuireadh aon dramhaíl nach bhféadfaí athchúrsáil a dhéanamh uirthi i mála gorm.

The children in Gaelscoil an Ghoirt Álainn both enjoyed and benefitted immensely from participating in the National Spring Clean on 25th and 26th April 2017.  The Green-Schools Committee asked each class to clean a particular area of the school building/surroundings and the pupils did so with great enthusiasm and diligence.

The children in Junior Infants, Senior Infants and First Class tidied their classrooms.  Múinteoir Cristín’s Second Class cleaned the old hall and Múinteoir Nóirín’s Second and Third Class tidied the new hall.  Múinteoir Lisa C’s Third Class picked up litter from the footpaths and grass between the school building and the playing field, and Múinteoir Deiric’s Fourth and Fifth Class collected litter which was on the other side of the building.  Múinteoir Eilish’s Fourth Class cleaned the yard.  Múinteoir Máire’s Fifth Class cleaned the playing field which is directly beside the school, and Múinteoir Anna and Múinteoir Niamh’s Sixth Class cleaned the other playing field.

All of the pupils wore the gloves and tabards supplied by An Taisce in order to keep their hands and clothes clean.  Some classes used brushes, dust pans and dust brushes as well.  The children were very careful to ensure that they put paper, cardboard, plastic and metal in green bags so that they would be recycled.  (Of course, they had to empty each plastic bottle before putting it in a green bag.)  Any waste which could not be recycled was put in a blue bag.

Lá ar Bheagán Fuinnimh 2018

  • Bhí Lá Gníomhach ar siúl sa scoil ar an 13ú Márta 2018. Chaith na páistí go léir an éide scoile ghlas don ócáid seo.
A Day of Action was held in the school on 13th March 2018.  All of the children wore their green school uniform for the occasion.
  • Iarradh ar gach rang an clár bán idirghníomhach a fhágáil múchta ar maidin, níos lú fótachóipeála a dhéanamh agus a ndícheall a dhéanamh go ginearálta fuinneamh a chaomhnú i rith an lae.
Each class was asked to leave their interactive whiteboard switched off that morning, to photocopy less and to do their best in general to conserve energy during the day.
  • Reáchtáladh tionól scoile speisialta tar éis am sosa mhóir. Chuir an Coiste Glas an obair a bhí déanta ag an scoil chun fuinneamh a chaomhnú le dhá bliain anuas i láthair go dátheangach, agus chan na páistí go léir na hamhráin “Úsáid Arís!”, “Cuir ort dó Chóta!” agus an Cód Glas.
A special school assembly was held after big break.  The Green-Schools Committee made a bilingual presentation about the school’s efforts to conserve energy over the past two years and all of the children sang the songs “Úsáid Arís!”, “Cuir ort do Chóta!” and the Green Code.
  • Bronnadh teastais ar na buaiteoirí den chomórtas ealaíne.
Certificates were presented to the winners of the art competition.
  • Bronnadh teastais ar bhaill an Choiste Ghlais 2016-2017 agus ar bhaill an Choiste Ghlais 2017-2018.
Certificates were presented to the 2016-2017 Green-Schools Committee and to the 2017-2018 Green-Schools Committee.

The pupils wore the gloves and tabards supplied by An Taisce in order to keep their hands and clothes clean.  Some classes used brushes, dust pans and dust brushes as well.  The children were very careful again this year to ensure that they put paper, cardboard, plastic and metal in green bags so that they would be recycled.  Any waste which could not be recycled was put in a blue bag.

🎤🎻💚🎹 An Cód Glas 🎤🎻💚🎹

Táimid an-bhródúil as ár gCód Glas a chum Rang a Dó (M. Nóirín) bunaithe ar na smaointe cliste a bhí ag na ranganna go léir sa scoil chun fuinneamh a chaomhnú!

We are very proud of our Green Code which Múinteoir Nóirín’s Second Class composed based on the clever ideas all of the classes in the school had to conserve energy.

Cuir as na soilse mura bhfuil siad uait níos mó.

Múch an teas is gléasanna nuair nach bhfuil aon ghá leo.

Oscail na dallóga má tá seomra dorcha.

Scaoil solas an lae isteach trí na fuinneoga.

Mar i nGaelscoil an Ghoirt Álainn

Ní maith linn cur amú.

Déan do dhícheall fuinneamh a chaomhnú!

Coinnigh na doirse dúnta nuair atá an lá fuar.

Ná scaoil séideáin isteach. Déan iarracht mhór.
